Belgo, Shibuya

27 July 2009

Belgo is a great little bar just a few minutes walk from Shibuya station – though in the opposite direction to the crowded 109 area. Again, it can be a little difficult to find – a narrow entrance leading down to the basement.

In the basement over two levels, inside it’s divided into four small areas which each only contain seating for a handful of people. It can seem cramped and can get smoky at times; it’s also quite popular and often full.

On draught there are around 6 beers on tap – Chimay White (usually), Leffe, Belle Vue Kriek, Guinness, and some guest beers. Although the draught beers are all Belgian (with the exception of Guinness), on bottle there’s a good selection of non-Belgian beers including Anchor Liberty Ale and Porter, Badger Tangle Foot, Black Sheep, Scotney, and Monty Python’s Holy Ail (beers are subject to change of course.)

There's also a surprisingly good selection of non-Belgian beers at Belgo

In fact, Belgo has one of the best selections of bottled British ales in Tokyo – “unusual” bottles that you wont even find in the “British” bars in Tokyo. Puts those bars to shame really with their boring British selection. There’s no Rogue or Stone or Japanese craft beers here though. Expect to pay about 1000 yen for an Anchor and 1250 yen for a large bottle of something British like Black Sheep.

Belgo’s website is here. It’s part of the same chain as Failte in Shibuya and Frigo in Shinjuku.

The map on the Belgo website is pretty terrible – GMAP has a better one here. Phone number: 03-3409-4442. Belgo is closed the 3rd Sunday every month.

My opinion? I would go here more often if Belle Vue Kriek was a bit cheaper on tap – but it seems everywhere is expensive for Belle Vue Kriek, which is a problem for me because I down the tiny glasses way too quickly. Still I find myself drifting back to Belgo every now and then for the excellent chips (French fries) – they may be made from frozen, but they taste amazing – a few Belle Vue Krieks, and a bottle of something British. A good place.
