Popeye is the place you have to visit if you’re serious about beer and in Tokyo. Only at Popeye can you find 50+ beers on tap at any one time – a mix of Japanese and import beers, with everything from weizen to barley wine.

Not only is there a huge range of beers on offer, but they also have hand pumped beers and a unique “Hops Heart” where they’ll serve two small glasses of one beer, each one poured through different hops. It’s sometimes possible to find the same beer on CO2 draught, hand pumped, and through Hops Heart – four different ways of drinking the same beer!

During happy hour, 5-8pm, every beer you order from the menu with a crown beside it gets you a small plate of food – and you can get a plate with every crowned beer you order. If you’re going to be visiting Popeye more than once, make sure you sign up for their members card – it gets you a small discount and they send the occasional coupon.

My opinion? It took me a long time to visit Popeye because it seemed like a hassle to go all the way to Ryogoku – but it really is worth it. Excellent range of beers, good happy hour and members card, and friendly staff. Popeye is a legend in Japan – don’t miss this place if you’re visiting Tokyo.
